| The Asian Center for
the Progress of Peoples conducted its regional
Training Workshop on 10-13 October 2009 at St.
Gabriel, Bangkok, with the participation of 21
justice and peace workers from Cambodia, Hong
Kong, India, Mongolia, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri
Lanka, Taiwan and Thailand, each one as a
resource person sharing experiences, challenges,
analyses, plans on "Responding to
Injustices" in their respective countries. |
| |
| Through a
reflection-sharing-discussion process, the
Workshop aims to share, explore, analyze the
experiences, methods, approaches of the
participants' response to injustices; and renew,
clarify commitment, role and direction, as well
as plans for justice and peace work. While the
process and methodology were used to allow
greater sharing by participants, those tools
could also be used to help analysis, evaluation,
reflection and planning process in their own
contexts. |
Sharing "The Wall"
|
All participants were
pre-warned that the Workshop design will require
them to be responsible for their own learning
while facilitators help in the process of
sharing, categorizing experiences, analyzing
responses, reflecting, through group work,
exercises, some analysis tools like the Force
Field Analysis, The Wall, and networking
stations. They were also encouraged to join
special teams for documentation, energizing,
daily liturgy/celebration and the solidarity
evenings.
|
| Briefing and
orientation started the night before the official
first day to help get into the sharing and
working-together mode and to get acquainted with
the various tools that will be used throughout
the programme, such as the Wall, the learning
break, intensive group work, etc. Sharing and
categorizing expectations, actions taken and
targets of action, and challenges in groups
helped in clarifying and concretizing
expectations and reflecting on the nature and
purpose of participants' own actions and foster
solidarity for each other's issues. |

Discussion "Power
Chair" |
On the following day's sharing of the sequence of
actions taken also helped group members suggest
alternative ways of doing things to each other,
as well as bring out that identifying targets,
objectives and planning strategies are the basis
of effective actions and activities. To further
analyze their experiences, a tool called the
Force Field Analysis was used to explore and
identify the driving forces and restraining
forces towards the goal of participantsˇ¦
actions, and identify a clear goal from the
beginning. The concept of international
solidarity was also clarified to give
participants a proper perspective on when it is
possible and effective for them to draw on the
"expertise" of Hotline Asia's Urgent
Appeals and other activities at the regional
level. Time was given for reflection on their
future plan as well as to concretely ask for
specific support through networking stations,
where a formal chance was given to all
participants to interact with each other again in
case they were not able to interact with all
participants during the 4-day workshop.
Participants were also invited to take the
opportunity of optional evenings to share issues
of their country and appeal for solidarity. |
Each day ended with a leaning break, where
participants shared their insights and learning,
which were also posted in the wall, and a time
for silent reflection and celebration of the
day's learning to strengthen each other's
personal commitment for justice and peace. At the end of the Workshop,
participants commented that they liked the design
of the programme and that it would enhance their
future response to injustices. Most found the
Force Field Analysis exercise on analyzing
driving force and restraining forces, to be most
useful, followed by the discussion and
categorizing challenges and actions taken. Among
the most impressive learning were on: how to
sharpen goals and making them realistic;
developing personal contact with participants
through sharing of experiences; gaining
inspiration for the mission, and realizing the
need to revise present activities. It was also
requested that the ˇ§optional solidarity
eveningˇ¨ where participants offer to present
their issues outside the Workshop time, helped to
concretize the realities read in publications and
internet, become a compulsory session.
